| A Story |
|
| Setting the world on fire I was working with a group of supervisors of a large printing company in Mumbai. Most were in the mid 50s, all had worked with the company for many years, and in most cases, received little or no management training during that time. The topic of the day was 'Leadership and teambuilding', and I must admit that we were struggling a bit with the concept, particularly as the group told me (almost proudly) that they believed they had never worked as a team. 'What? never!', I was hoping to storm someone's memory. They were adamant that such was the tradition of the company where they worked. They never experienced a feeling of team support or cohesion. There was an almost defiant silence for quite sometime. Someone cleared his throat, another folded his arms. An uneasy calmness prevailed and I was searching frantically for the next question. And then all of a sudden Vineet, who until now had volunteered very little, said, 'except of course when we had "the fire"….' The rest of the group joined in, 'Ah, yes, but that was different when we had the fire…'. The words 'the fire' were spoken almost in reverent tones. 'Tell me about the fire,' I encouraged, attempting to sense the reverence of the occasion. Vineet went on to reminisce the occasion, some ten years earlier when an extremely bad fire had almost wiped out the whole factory site. '…. But we all knew what we had to do,' she continued, almost in dreams, 'we had one goal, to get the place up and running as quickly as possible, everybody mucked in together, there was such a good atmosphere…. ' As she continued to talk, with the others chipping in their own personal memories, I walked up to the flip chart and, unnoticed, started to write down the key words she mentioned: One goal, Sense of direction, Synergy, Focus, Deadline, Team spirit, Humor, Enthusiasm, Positive thinking. The challenge facing most organizations today is to find a way to unleash what is already there, without going round setting fire to things. |
