Heritage

The Founder

Radhashyam Roy (1899-1960)

Radhashyam Roy, a school teacher from Narayanganj (now in Bangladesh), founded Peerless Insurance Company Limited in 1932 with a modest working capital of Rs. 300. His mission was to create jobs for locals and build a business that financially empowered Indians, freeing them from foreign control.

Amid the political awakening of the Gandhian era, he transformed this nationalistic spirit into a business opportunity. His innovative approach, including small savings schemes and proactive service, made financial security accessible to the common person.

Under his leadership, Peerless grew from a small insurance startup into a leading Provident Insurance Company, expanding from small-scale savings to broader financial services.

The Architect

Bhudeb Kanti Roy (1925-1985)

With the same focus and determination as his father (R. S. Roy), Bhudeb Kanti Roy transformed Peerless into a household name. In 1956, he made history by introducing the Social Welfare Scheme, pioneering the concept of Recurring Deposits in India.

He also introduced the revolutionary idea of doorstep service, mobilizing small savings from semi-urban and rural areas, making financial security more accessible. In 1972, Peerless expanded its offerings by providing free accident insurance along with its savings schemes, significantly boosting its reach and scale.

Bhudeb Kanti Roy also introduced the Swarojgar Yojana, a unique direct marketing model that engaged agents as self-employed entrepreneurs, ensuring operational control while creating livelihood opportunities.

The Guiding Light

Sunil Kanti Roy (1944–2022)

Sunil Kanti Roy joined Peerless at 25 as an assistant secretary, deeply influenced by the company’s founding principles. His visionary leadership transformed Peerless into one of Bengal’s leading business conglomerates, diversifying into hospitality, healthcare, and real estate, and creating significant employment opportunities.

Driven by a passion for social impact, he established the B K Roy Foundation, dedicated to community welfare, and the Peerless Skill Academy, turning his vision of skill development into reality.

Over the decades, his contributions were recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri (2009), Shiromani Award (1992), Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Puraskar (1993), Doordarshan Hall of Fame Award (2004), and the Economic Times Lifetime Achievement Award (2017-18), celebrating his remarkable journey as a corporate leader.

Leading Peerless forward

Jayanta Roy

Jayanta Roy is leading Peerless at a time of transformation and expansion. While staying true to its legacy, Peerless is now growing into new areas and strengthening its presence across businesses.

He spearheaded PGFI’s first independent real estate venture, Trayam, a mixed-use development in Kolkata that marks a strategic shift in the Group’s growth journey. Under his leadership, the Group has also expanded significantly across its businesses—most notably in healthcare, where it achieved two defining milestones in its 30-year journey in the sector: the establishment of a state-of-the-art oncology centre (SRIOS) and the Group’s first-ever hospital acquisition in Guwahati, extending Peerless’ healthcare footprint beyond Bengal for the first time.

He has also placed CSR at the heart of Peerless’ journey, expanding its reach across education, healthcare, and child development—ensuring the Group’s growth is matched by lasting social impact.
